World cup 2018: Croatia beat the hosts Russia on Penalties.

Croatia were looking to get to a world semi-final for the first time since 1998 but intheir way were the spirited host nation Russia who themselves were looking to get to a world semi-final for the first time since 1966.Denis Cherychev’s thirtyfirst minute thunderbolt of a strike that gave goalkeeper Subasic no chance gave the host nation a 1-0 lead but Croatia crawled back just nine minutes later with a header from Anderj Kramaric after some neat work from Mario Mandzukic.It was 1-1 at the end of the regular ninety minutes so both teams had to do with extra time for the second game running.Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida headed in Croatia’s second from a Luka Modric corner ten minutes into extra time. Brazilian born Mario Fernandes head in the equaliser inthe one hundrendth and fifteenth minute from a Allan Dzagoev freekick.It ended 2-2 after extra time and so it was penalties again for both sides.Brozovic,modric,Rakitic and Vida scored for Croatia but Kovacic missed.Dzagoev,Ignashevich and Kuzyayev scored but misses from Smolov and Fernandes saw the hosts knocked out.Croatia will face England inthe semis.
